Parawinging is a watersport where you ride a hydrofoil board powered by a small, single-skin wing — a parawing — flown on short lines from a handle, like a miniature paraglider. How parawinging works

A parawing is a soft, frameless canopy connected by a bridle of thin lines to one or two handles. You fly it overhead or to the side to generate pull, the same way a kite does, but at much closer range and without a bar, harness or long lines. The pull gets your foil board moving; once the hydrofoil lifts and you are riding, you can keep flying the parawing for continuous power — or depower it, wad it into a compact bundle, and tuck it into a waist pouch while you ride the foil on swell energy alone.

What gear do you need?

  • Parawing — sized like wings, commonly 2.5–6 m². Smaller sizes for stronger wind and smaller riders.
  • Foil board — most riders use a mid-length or downwind-style board with more length and glide than a typical wing board.
  • Hydrofoil — a high-aspect foil in roughly the 800–1400 cm² range, chosen for glide and pump efficiency rather than raw stability.
  • Waist pouch or belt — to stow the packed parawing while riding.
  • Leash, impact vest and appropriate wetsuit — parawinging usually happens in open water, so treat safety gear as mandatory.

How to learn parawinging

  1. Learn to wing foil first. Board and foil control transfer directly, and you'll only be learning one new skill — the parawing — instead of three at once.
  2. Fly the parawing on land. Learn launching, depowering, and the wrap-and-stow routine in a field before adding water.
  3. Start on flat water. Practice taxiing, getting on foil, and — crucially — repacking and relaunching the wing while riding.
  4. Move to small swell. Get on foil, stow the wing, ride the bump, relaunch. That loop is the sport.
