Best wind
The official destination guide documents a dominant S/SW thermal climbing the Durance valley, commonly 15-20 kt in midsummer. A north/Mistral flow can disrupt it and make the lake irregular; check the live Chadenas station and choose a designated launch for the day's level: https://www.serreponcon.com/lac-de-serre-poncon/activites-nautiques/kitesurf-wingfoil-brise-thermique/ https://www.serreponcon.com/webcams/
Season
April-May can have low reservoir level and requires launch selection; June-August has the established afternoon thermal but heavy swimmer/pedalo use at some beaches. The current Chanterenne school operates 21 May-21 September 2026. This supports a spring-summer foil season with launch changes, not uniform year-round access: https://www.serreponcon.com/lac-de-serre-poncon/activites-nautiques/kitesurf-wingfoil-brise-thermique/ https://www.serreponcon.com/voile/le-spot-wingfoil-windsurf-school-serre-poncon-6144920/
Water
Large freshwater mountain reservoir, generally flat without ocean swell but with thermal-wind chop. Water level changes materially by season; the official guide directs spring riders to Savines/Embrun and summer riders to Eaux Douces, Chanterenne or Chadenas for suitable depth: https://www.serreponcon.com/lac-de-serre-poncon/activites-nautiques/kitesurf-wingfoil-brise-thermique/
Experience
All-level coaching is available at named Crots beaches, while the database coordinate is an open-water lake pin. Beginners should use Eaux Douces, Chanterenne or another current designated launch with instruction; independent riders need reliable upwind return and cold/open-water self-rescue: https://www.serreponcon.com/voile/le-spot-wingfoil-windsurf-school-serre-poncon-6144920/ https://www.serreponcon.com/lac-de-serre-poncon/activites-nautiques/kitesurf-wingfoil-brise-thermique/ https://www.serreponcon.com/lac-de-serre-poncon/les-plages-de-serre-poncon/plage-des-eaux-douces/
Hazards
Changing reservoir level and exposed shallows, sudden mountain weather/gusts, a disrupted thermal in north wind, cold open water, and summer conflicts with swimmers, pedalos, boats, tow sports and other foilers are documented. In June-August the official guide strongly discourages Savines/Embrun navigation because of traffic; use designated beaches, maintain depth and carry a self-rescue plan: https://www.serreponcon.com/lac-de-serre-poncon/activites-nautiques/kitesurf-wingfoil-brise-thermique/ https://www.serreponcon.com/lac-de-serre-poncon/les-plages-de-serre-poncon/plage-des-eaux-douces/ https://www.serreponcon.com/webcams/
Parking & access
No parking exists at this water pin. Eaux Douces has RN94 parking and a camper area; Chanterenne's school listing confirms onsite parking. Use the lot for the selected named launch and respect summer crowd/fire/access controls: https://www.serreponcon.com/lac-de-serre-poncon/les-plages-de-serre-poncon/plage-des-eaux-douces/ https://www.serreponcon.com/voile/le-spot-wingfoil-windsurf-school-serre-poncon-6144920/
“This spot is a Wingfoil paradise. It’s located in the French alps and consists of a fresh-water reservoir. The wind is stable and the scenery is great. You can park 2026-08-02 requested-field verification: The lake pin is not a launch. Official 2026 sources support S/SW afternoon thermal, seasonal water-level launch changes, named Crots schools/parking and a working regional live-camera page. Exact access at the coordinate and a surf report remain unverified.”
