Best wind
Choose by legal launch: Zeche Carl Funke W/NW/SE; Bachtrail W/NW/E/S; ESV and Seaside SW/E; Hardenbergufer SSW with limited ENE. Wind can be gusty and rotate at narrow or sheltered reaches, so there is no defensible single direction for this lake pin: https://wingfoiling-baldeneysee.de/
Season
No lake-wide best-wind season is established. The legal-launch guide reports no seasonal closure at several entries, while Seaside Beach access follows its roughly May-September opening. City parking management applies 15 April-15 October; neither window guarantees suitable wind: https://wingfoiling-baldeneysee.de/ https://www.essen.de/meldungen/pressemeldung_1572978.de.html
Water
Freshwater Ruhr reservoir with flat water to short wind chop and no tide. It is heavily shared by recreation, sailing, rowing and passenger vessels; shoreline geometry and wind quality differ substantially among the five legal launches: https://wingfoiling-baldeneysee.de/
Experience
Launch-dependent urban reservoir. The local wingfoil guide lists only named legal entries: ESV Grün-Weiß is private/member access with accompanied guests, while Seaside Beach has the lake's wingfoil school. Beginners should use instruction; independent riders need gusty-wind control, safe channel crossings and the correct permitted launch: https://wingfoiling-baldeneysee.de/
Hazards
Only listed legal entries may be used; eFoiling and kiting are prohibited. Navigation closes at Hattingen gauge 431 cm; stay 300 m from the Werden dam, cross the buoyed channel only by the shortest path, give the White Fleet priority and avoid regattas/partial closures. Gusts, wind shifts, swimmers, crowded cycle paths and narrow rigging/launch areas add launch-specific risk: https://wingfoiling-baldeneysee.de/
Parking & access
Parking is launch-specific: ESV is walk/bike-only with a large lot about 400 m away; Seaside uses Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße bays; other public entries have their own described lots. City parking management began for the 2026 season, 15 April-15 October, daily 10:00-17:00; check the selected lot's posted tariff rather than assuming old free guidance still applies: https://wingfoiling-baldeneysee.de/ https://www.essen.de/meldungen/pressemeldung_1572978.de.html
“Not a spot with a lot of strong winds but great for a session if you are around the area. You can prepare your equipment on the grass and have 2026-08-02 requested-field verification: The exact dedicated local guide resolves five legal launches, direction-specific use, private/member access, lake rules and vessel/dam/high-water hazards. Current city parking management replaces stale free-parking assumptions. The ESV camera is direct but launch-specific; no surf report applies.”
