Viana Do Castelo District, Portugal · 41.8673, -8.8599

Best wind
NW/N Nortada is the primary supported direction, usually building from noon through late afternoon. The operator also documents local morning/evening thermal effects; SW can be gusty/offshore at Foz do Minho despite producing open-coast waves. Treat NW/N as the high-confidence sector and verify all other flow with the center: https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/location-2/ https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/wingfoil-in-portugal/
Season
April-October is the school's published primary season for reliable NW Nortada; summer afternoons are the thermal peak. Winter SW conditions can create larger open-coast waves but are not presented as the beginner season: https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/wingfoil-in-portugal/ https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/location-2/
Water
Tidal Rio Minho river-mouth water with a sandy shore, about 20 m of standing area and an offshore sandbank that may dry or become another standing area depending on tide. The operator also uses nearby open ocean with small-to-larger waves; this record is the Praia Foz do Minho center/launch, not every regional wave spot: https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/location-2/ https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/wingfoil-in-portugal/
Experience
Beginner through advanced with the environment matched to ability. The school describes a sheltered, sandy, partly standable river-side beginner area plus nearby open-ocean wave options for experienced foilers; courses and coaching cover all levels. Independent use still requires tide, current and channel judgment: https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/wingfoil-in-portugal/ https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/location-2/
Hazards
Tide-dependent shallow foil depth and a drying/submerged sandbank, river current, Atlantic swell, cold water, open-ocean exposure and gusty/offshore SW wind require active judgment. The river mouth also contains port/bar and Caminha-La Guardia navigation channels with marked buoys and vessel traffic. Official rules prohibit windsurf/kitesurf in bars and access channels without authorization and impose separation from channel marks; they do not explicitly name wingfoil, so confirm current wing rules with the Capitania and never obstruct navigation. Boat rescue is an operator service, not guaranteed cover for independent riders: https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/location-2/ https://www.amn.pt/DGAM/Capitanias/Caminha/Lists/Documentos_AMN/Edital%20Capitania%20653-2023_12ABR2023.pdf
Parking & access
The school says the Praia Foz do Minho base is a short walk from parking and provides on-site showers, toilets, rinse/storage facilities and optional boat service. Exact lot, fee, capacity, overnight rights and independent launch entitlement remain unverified: https://mainpeak-wing.com/en/wingfoil-in-portugal/
