“Vella Island is a remote, curved sandbar in the Puttalam Lagoon off Kalpitiya, about 25 km downwind of the main lagoon and reachable only by boat in summer. The shape of the bar shelters the water from the open ocean once the SW monsoon kicks in, leaving butter-flat standing water over a pale sandy bottom across a radius of roughly 2 km.
