Hazards
Laguna Madre is very shallow, making mast strikes likely outside checked channels. Stay clear of learners, anchored craft and the boat ramp; nearby Intracoastal traffic, heat, wildlife and offshore S-SE recovery are additional risks: https://home.nps.gov/places/bird-island-basin-day-use-area.htm https://www.nps.gov/pais/learn/management/superintendents-compendium.htm
Parking & access
Exact NPS day-use area provides auto parking and a small-craft launch. Park entrance and current Bird Island Basin use/parking rules apply; no roadside shoulder parking and hours/closures must be checked before travel: https://home.nps.gov/places/bird-island-basin-day-use-area.htm https://www.nps.gov/pais/learn/management/superintendents-compendium.htm https://www.nps.gov/pais/planyourvisit/fees.htm?fullweb=1
“Bird Island Basin sits on the Laguna Madre within Padre Island National Seashore, south of Corpus Christi in South Texas. In the shelter of Padre Island a shallow, warm lagoon forms, with bay-side flats running hip-deep for hundreds of yards – a forgiving learning venue and at the same time a huge freestyle playground. The wind comes mainly from the south and southeast, blowing trade-wind-like and steady across the lagoon in the main season from April to September. How windy is the Laguna Madre? Requested-field batch 12 verified 2026-08-01: exact, nearby, route, area, operator and community-candidate relationships remain explicit; generic coordinate-only Surfline maps were removed where no meaningful report exists; unresolved items remain Unknown.”
