Downwind run
Launch: Gossman's
Landing: Napeague Lazy Point Boat Launch
We couldn't place this run on the map yet — endpoints read from the run name.
Best wind
Strong westerly for the stated east-to-west Gossman's-to-Napeague direction; reject any observed angle that removes a safe downwind landing
Season
Fall is locally recommended; cold-water protection is required when appropriate
Water
Exposed Block Island Sound / Gardiners Bay downwind water between Lake Montauk Inlet and Napeague Harbor; conditions vary with wind, tide and swell
Experience
Advanced coastal downwinder; requires local route, current, weather, bailout and shuttle planning
Hazards
Advanced exposed coastal crossing with Lake Montauk Inlet current and navigation traffic, open-water wind/swell, cold water, shallow Napeague Harbor and foil-strike risk near the finish, changing weather, permit-controlled access, and no assumed rescue. Confirm the track, tide, bailouts, communications and vehicle shuttle locally before departure.
Parking & access
Plan a two-vehicle shuttle and confirm legal signed access at both endpoints. The Napeague finish is permit-controlled by East Hampton Town: https://www.ehamptonny.gov/798/Lazy-Point-Beach
“Jason identified the previously undisclosed route as starting at Gossman's Montauk Inlet and finishing at the Napeague Lazy Point boat launch. The endpoint is the Town's Lazy Point bay beach/launching ramp represented by FS-1041. The stored coordinate is only the midpoint between the two endpoint pins, not a surveyed GPS track. The original forum source supports a Montauk East End downwind run and productive strong-westerly/fall patterns but did not publish the opposite endpoint.”
