The GPS speed categories used in speedsurfing measure your best average speed over defined windows: time-based (2-second peak, 10 seconds, 30 minutes, 1 hour), distance-based (100 m, 250 m, 500 m, 1 km, nautical mile), and technique-based (alpha 500 — a 500 m run containing a gybe that finishes within 50 m of its start). Each category exists to answer a different question about how fast you really are.

Why categories instead of "top speed"?

Raw instantaneous top speed is nearly meaningless from GPS: a single noisy sample can add a knot or three that never happened. The speedsurfing community — organized around platforms like GPS-Speedsurfing and the GPS Team Challenge — solved this by standardizing on averages over windows, which are robust to noise and comparable across riders, spots and days.

The alpha 500, in detail

The alpha is the category everyone asks about. The rules: your best average speed over 500 meters of track, containing a gybe, where the end point lies within 50 meters of the start point. The proximity rule forces a genuine out-and-back — you can't cheat with a broad arc — so a good alpha requires entry speed, a tight carve, and a fast exit. It is the single best number for measuring gybe quality under pressure.

How the measurement is done properly

Two details separate serious speed measurement from a fitness app's odometer:

  • Doppler speed, not position differences. GPS receivers measure velocity directly from the Doppler shift of satellite signals, which is far less noisy than differencing positions. Serious tools use it exclusively — more in our GPS accuracy guide.
  • Continuous-track computation. Category windows should be computed on the continuous track rather than snapped to the nearest sample — one second of snap error is ten meters at twenty knots.
