Speed Windsurfing: How to Sail Faster in a Straight Line

Speed windsurfing (speedsurfing) is the pursuit of maximum GPS-measured speed over standard categories — 2-second peak, 100 m, 500 m, nautical mile and others. The formula is consistent: strong wind (25 knots+), water as flat as possible, a broad reach around 110–140° off the wind, small dedicated gear, and a body position that converts gusts into acceleration instead of altitude.

The spot matters more than the sailor

Every fast time shares one ingredient: flat water in strong wind — a rare combination, because wind makes chop. Speed spots solve it with geography: a shallow strip of water directly downwind of a sandbar, breakwater or beach, where the wind arrives at full strength but the fetch is a few meters. Sailing a speed strip at 35 knots of wind on knee-deep glass is a different sport from open-water blasting — and it's where personal bests happen.

Gear, briefly

  • Boards: narrow, low-volume speed or slalom boards (roughly 45–60 cm wide) that ride on a postage stamp of wetted surface.
  • Sails: small, flat, heavily cambered race/speed sails — control beats power once you're lit.
  • Fins: small speed fins (or asymmetric weed fins in shallow spots); at speed, the fin is most of your drag budget.
  • Trim: boom low, harness lines long, mast foot forward — everything aimed at keeping the nose down and the board quiet.

Anatomy of a speed run

  1. Get fully planing and locked in on a beam reach, body extended, rig raked back.
  2. Bear away progressively — not all at once — trading angle for acceleration as the apparent wind builds.
  3. Absorb, don't fight. Legs work like suspension; the rig stays still. Every wobble sheds tenths of a knot.
  4. Ride the gust down the strip. In a gust, bear away further; in a lull, head up slightly to keep apparent wind pressure.
  5. Exit with room. Fast crashes are expensive. Plan the end of the run before you start it.

Speedsurfing runs on GPS.
