conditions & access

Season

Late-March trip discussion; avoid low tide

Water

North Shore reef surf; can work across tides but has shallow sections at low tide

Experience

Intermediate-to-advanced reef and lineup-aware prone foiler

Hazards

Shallow reef at lower tide, surf-school beginners and crowding. Stay out of the inside teaching zone and assess reef clearance before committing.

Parking & access

Use legal Haleʻiwa/Puaʻena coastal access; the forum does not identify a preferred lot or paddle-out.

“Progression Project forum visitor guidance identifies Puaʻena Point as the preferred North Shore prone option when tide is not too low. A follow-up recommends the middle section near the point when swell has size, while avoiding the inside surf-school zone. A separate Progression Project forum visit says Puaʻena can work across the tide cycle but remains shallow in places at low tide, and warns that the inside is occupied by surf schools.”
