conditions & access

Season

July 2024 first-hand race account; no independent-riding season established

Water

Kaiwi Channel current, multidirectional swell and boat wake; rough island reverb near Oʻahu, followed by groomed southeast swell on the Hawaii Kai segment

Experience

Expert expedition/race downwinder with escort vessel, endurance and channel-rescue competence

Hazards

Rough Kaiwi Channel current, swell from multiple directions, severe boat-wake traffic, rebound about five miles off Oʻahu, fatigue, long remounts, roughly forty miles of open water and limited bailouts. Event escort presence must not be assumed outside the race.

Parking & access

This is an event-scale inter-island crossing, not a casual shuttle. Use authorized race or expedition logistics, an escort vessel, tracking, communications and confirmed Molokaʻi/Oʻahu access; the forum does not publish parking or independent launch rights.

“A Progression Project forum M2O finisher gives a first-hand account of the Molokaʻi-to-Oʻahu crossing: three distinct phases, strong mid-channel current and intersecting swell, increasing island rebound about five miles from Oʻahu, then an approximately eight-mile Hawaii Kai segment with groomed southeast swell. The route pin is schematic because the post does not publish the start, finish or track.”
