Best wind
SW is the exact wing guide's preferred sector; W, NW and N can also work. E-SE is offshore and less suitable. In strong W wind the open lake becomes rougher and returning to the basin can be demanding; use a side-on/returnable sector appropriate to the chosen entry: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-makkum/spots https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/makkum/
Season
No reliable exact source establishes one best wingfoil month window. The separate official kite zone operates October-April because summer brings bathers; wingfoil is not automatically governed by that kite-only window, so verify current beach signs and keep out of swim/nature/navigation sectors year-round: https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/makkum/ https://www.waterlandvanfriesland.nl/en/locations/3708258711/kitesurfing-spot-at-makkum https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-makkum/spots
Water
Tide-free freshwater. The inner Makkum basin is shallow and relatively flat, while outside it the open IJsselmeer develops short chop and stronger wind. Water level changes the walk to safe mast depth, and some nearshore sections are muddy, stony or contain basalt: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-makkum/spots https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/makkum/ https://www.windmeister.nl/makkum/
Experience
Beginner through advanced, but launch sector matters. The exact wing guide places learners in the shallow, flatter inner basin and experienced riders in open IJsselmeer chop; low water can delay foil depth. The current kite-zone page independently labels all levels but its kite rules must not be treated as blanket wingfoil permission: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-makkum/spots https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/makkum/
Hazards
Shallow foil depth and variable water level, mud/stones/basalt, crowding, windsurfers and swimmers, rapidly building open-lake chop, offshore E-SE wind, an unmarked outer boundary, the buoyed navigation channel toward Kornwerderzand and adjacent protected habitat are documented. Do not cross the channel/nature boundary and keep clear of the kite launch zone and summer beach users: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-makkum/spots https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/makkum/ https://www.windmeister.nl/makkum/
Parking & access
Free waterfront parking, food and toilets are published for the exact Makkum watersports area. Parking can fill early on busy days; resort accommodation spaces and private plots are not public launch parking, so follow current signs and do not infer overnight/camper permission: https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/makkum/ https://www.waterlandvanfriesland.nl/en/locations/3708258711/kitesurfing-spot-at-makkum https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-makkum/spots
“is a cool place in Friesland, where many watersporters come to enjoy their passion. The spot is close to a very good wingfoil spot called Kornwerderzand and the Afsluitdijk. 2026-08-02 requested-field verification: Exact current wing, managed-zone, tourism, wind and camera resources establish the basin/open-lake split, wind sectors, free parking and concrete depth, traffic, crowd, rock and offshore risks. The October-April rule is explicitly kite-specific; no unsupported wing season or surf report was added.”
