Best wind
SW, W and S are preferred at the exact Paviljoen entry. N can carry a rider far out across the lake and NW can be gustier; other directions may work because of the open setting, but independent riders need a clear return and reliable upwind/self-rescue ability: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-paviljoen-tjeukemeer
Season
Unverified. No checked exact source publishes a best wingfoil month window or seasonal closure. Summer brings more recreational traffic, while cold-water exposure is material outside summer; check current paviljoen/access status rather than assuming year-round services: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-paviljoen-tjeukemeer https://forum.timeto.surf/forum/thread/1122-tts-user-am-tjeukemeer-nl-rohel-neben-campingplatz/
Water
Large, tide-free freshwater lake with a sheltered nearshore basin and open water deep enough for standard roughly 75-85 cm foil masts. Short, steep inland chop builds with wind; a firsthand community access report describes at least hip-deep water beyond the narrow basin channel and about 1 m running waves above 5-6 Bft: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-paviljoen-tjeukemeer https://forum.timeto.surf/forum/thread/1122-tts-user-am-tjeukemeer-nl-rohel-neben-campingplatz/
Experience
Intermediate independent rider recommended. The exact Paviljoen Tjeukemeer guide says beginners can use the sheltered entry only with basic control and reliable upwind ability, and separately warns that escaping the small basin is difficult. There is no fixed local wingfoil school or verified rescue cover: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-paviljoen-tjeukemeer
Hazards
The difficult narrow exit from the sheltered basin, nearshore shallow margin, fast-building short chop, deep open water, north-wind drift over a large lake, sail/recreation traffic, long self-return distance, cold water and no verified rescue cover are material. Stay near the entry until upwind control is proven and inspect the channel/foil depth before mounting: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-paviljoen-tjeukemeer https://forum.timeto.surf/forum/thread/1122-tts-user-am-tjeukemeer-nl-rohel-neben-campingplatz/
Parking & access
Free close parking, grass rigging and a small sand entry are published at the Paviljoen launch. A firsthand 2025 report describes roughly 30-40 spaces; neither source establishes overnight/camper rights, and current paviljoen operating hours should be checked independently: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-paviljoen-tjeukemeer https://forum.timeto.surf/forum/thread/1122-tts-user-am-tjeukemeer-nl-rohel-neben-campingplatz/
“A lot of space to ride on this large lake in the beautiful province of Friesland. 2026-08-02 requested-field verification: Exact current guide and firsthand community access evidence establish the Paviljoen launch, standard-mast depth, SW/W/S preference, north drift, chop, free parking and difficult basin exit. The only camera page is clearly labeled nearby (6.4 km); season, rescue and surf report remain unverified.”
