Best wind
The exact wing guide calls SW and NW the most stable/popular, with W, S, SE, E, NE and N also potentially usable. NE is offshore; WNW/N sectors can be gusty behind the Afsluitdijk. Choose only a sector that preserves return within the marked zone: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-kornwerderzand https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/kornwerderzand/
Season
No checked source establishes a best wingfoil month window. The adjacent managed kitesurf zone is open May-September and closed October-April for protected birds; do not assume either that this kite window authorizes wingfoiling or that its closure automatically covers windsurf/wingfoil. Verify current signs and the zone manager before launching: https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/kornwerderzand/ https://www.learn2kite.nl/kitesurfleskornwerderzand
Water
Tide-free IJsselmeer freshwater with a shallow/flat inner third and deeper foil water outside, where wind creates chop and small rolling swell. The dike, sluice complex and direction create wind shadow or turbulence; depth changes materially across the zone: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-kornwerderzand https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/kornwerderzand/
Experience
Advanced for unsupported wingfoiling. The exact wing guide requires deep-water comfort and self-rescue; the current managed-zone page says roughly one-third is shallow learner water but the deeper two-thirds is the foil sector. A school lesson claim does not make independent offshore/open-water riding beginner-safe: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-kornwerderzand https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/kornwerderzand/ https://www.learn2kite.nl/kitesurfleskornwerderzand
Hazards
Fast-changing shallow-to-deep foil depth, offshore NE, dike turbulence/wind shadow, the A7 immediately behind the dike, limited beach space, fishing traps, navigation channel, Lorentz sluices, marked zone boundary and protected Noordwaard are documented. Stay out of traffic and habitat, keep away from fixed gear, and carry a deep-water self-rescue plan: https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-kornwerderzand https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/kornwerderzand/ https://www.antixsports.de/standorte/kitesurf-locatie-kornwerderzand/
Parking & access
A large free lot at Afsluitdijk Wadden Center and only limited spaces at the spot are published, with food, toilets and two EV chargers. Rig on the grass but enter/start from the small beach or water; the grass/dike is not a launch area: https://kitesurfvereniging.nl/kitespot/kornwerderzand/ https://ophetwater.nl/wingen/wingfoil-spot-kornwerderzand
“Kornwerderzand is a couple of kilometers away from wingfoil spot Makkum. By car it’s 15 minutes and by water it is about 3-5 kilometers. The advantage of going to wingfoil 2026-08-02 requested-field verification: Exact current wing, NKV and school sources establish advanced independent use, mixed depth, broad direction coverage, offshore/turbulence risk, free parking, an exact NKV wind station and protected/traffic boundaries. The kite-only May-September window is not misrepresented as a wing rule; no camera or surf report was found.”
